Albania

Buckle up for an exhilarating week-long road trip around Albania, a hidden gem of the Balkans! From ancient castles and mountain towns to vibrant beachside cities and breathtaking natural wonders, this itinerary promises a taste of Albania’s diverse beauty.

Like other destinations this can also be squeezed into a shorter, long weekend trip, i will show you where can be cut

Day 1: Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows (this can be skipped for Gjirokaster, but will leave you with a long drive from Tirana airport)

Start your journey in Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” due to its picturesque Ottoman-era houses. Spend the night within the walls of Berat Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the narrow cobblestone streets, visit the Onufri Museum, and soak in panoramic views of the city and river below.

Accommodation: If you do visit Berat i recommend staying in the castle for a truly unique stay, you can find it here

Day 2: Gjirokastër – The Stone City

Hit the road towards Gjirokastër, another UNESCO-listed town famed for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Spend the night in a traditional stone house and explore the Gjirokastër Fortress, home to a fascinating military museum. Don’t miss the Ethnographic Museum to learn about local traditions and daily life.

Accommodation: I would recommend (click on this link) here, right in the middle of the old town

Day 3: Sarandë – Beachside Revelry (this can be skipped, unless you like a party)

Drive south to Sarandë, a lively coastal town known for its buzzing nightlife and stunning beaches. Spend the afternoon soaking up the sun at Mirror Beach or chilling at one of the beachfront cafes. In the evening, dive into Sarandë’s nightlife scene with beachside bars and clubs.

Day 4: Ksamil – Paradise by the Ionian Sea

Just a stone’s throw from Sarandë lies Ksamil, a coastal paradise with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Relax on the white sandy beaches or take a boat ride to the nearby islands. Indulge in a seafood feast at one of the mussel restaurants—it’s a must-do in Ksamil! Visit the mesmerizing Blue Eye spring, a natural wonder with vivid blue hues.

Day 5: Exploration and Relaxation in Ksamil

Enjoy another day in Ksamil to unwind and explore. Snorkel in the turquoise waters, kayak around the coastline, or simply laze on the beach with a good book. Ksamil’s laid-back vibe makes it perfect for relaxation.

Day 6: Return to Sarandë (can be skipped if happy for a longer drive)

Head back to Sarandë for one final night of seaside fun. Reflect on your coastal adventures over a delicious Albanian dinner and perhaps join a beach party to cap off your trip.

Day 7: Departure

Bid farewell to Albania as you drive back to Berat or onward to Tirana for your departure. Take with you memories of Albania’s stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality.

Albania may have its share of visitors, but its unspoiled landscapes and affordable charms make it a must-visit destination in the Balkans. Embrace the spirit of adventure and discovery as you explore this beautiful country on a week-long road trip. Get ready for an unforgettable journey through Albania’s mountains, beaches, and cultural treasures!
