If you’re planning a road trip through South Africa’s Garden Route, you’re in for a breathtaking journey filled with dramatic coastlines, charming towns, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. After travelling this iconic route myself, I’ve put together the ultimate guide to the best stops along the Garden Route, including where to stay, what to do, and local tips you won’t find in a typical travel brochure.
From vibrant Cape Town to hidden beach grottoes in Wilderness, this is the only Garden Route itinerary you need.
📍 Start Your Journey in Cape Town (2–3 Days)
Before officially hitting the Garden Route, spend a couple of days exploring Cape Town, one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
🌊 Where to Stay in Cape Town
For a more local and laid-back vibe, avoid the tourist-heavy V&A Waterfront and stay in:
- Camps Bay – for beach views and beautiful sunsets
- Sea Point – great for morning walks on the promenade and easy access to town
🍽️ Where to Eat
- The Duchess of Wisbeach (Sea Point) – Head here on a Thursday night for live cabaret, old-school glam, and a fun crowd.
- Codfather Seafood & Sushi (Camps Bay) – No menu needed! Choose your fresh fish or sushi at the counter. A must for seafood lovers.
🍷 Stop 2: Wine & Relaxation in Franschhoek (1–2 Days)
Next, drive to Franschhoek, a stunning town in the Cape Winelands just 1.5 hours from Cape Town. This charming French-inspired village is perfect for a wine-soaked stopover.
🚋 Don’t Miss: The Franschhoek Wine Tram
Yes, it can sound confusing at first – different coloured lines, bus vs. tram, where to start – but honestly, once you’re there it’s super straightforward and the staff are really helpful.
We did tram first and took an Uber to the terminal, but you can also start from the centre of town with the bus. The schedule may seem early, but you need the time to enjoy each vineyard.
💡 Tip: Unless you have a specific vineyard in mind, don’t overthink the route colours – they’re all great and offer similar experiences.
🛌 Where to Stay in Franschhoek
- Franschhoek Camping Grounds – Ideal if you’re overlanding or travelling on a budget.
- The Corner House Guesthouse – Cosy, central, and close to top restaurants.
- Akademie Street Boutique Hotel – For a luxurious wine country escape.
🍴 The town is full of amazing restaurants, so consider staying within walking distance to enjoy a relaxed evening after the wine tram.

🍷 Bonus Detour: Lunch or Overnight in Stellenbosch
If time allows, make a stop in Stellenbosch – either for lunch or an overnight stay on your way from Franschhoek. The drive between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch is absolutely beautiful, winding through mountain passes and vineyards.
And if you do stop? Book a table at The Fat Butcher. It was genuinely one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten – perfectly cooked steaks, amazing wine list, and a warm, vibrant atmosphere that captures the soul of the Winelands.

🐋 Stop 3: Whale Watching in Hermanus (1 Day)
Drive south to Hermanus, world-famous for its whale watching. If you’re travelling in September, you’re in peak season – and the sightings can be incredible.
🐬 Our Experience
We went with Southern Right Charters – a small, ethical company. Not only did we get up close with southern right whales, but we also saw a superpod of 800 dolphins! Absolutely unforgettable.
🛏️ Where to Stay
Skip the busy town centre and stay in nearby Onrus – we loved the LemonTree along the coastal walk. It’s peaceful, stunning, and still close to all the action. Click here
🚖 Local Tip: Taxis and Ubers are limited – if you can, rent a car or arrange a local cab service in advance.

🌊 Stop 4: The Hidden Magic of Wilderness (2 Days)
Wilderness was our absolute favourite stop. Laid-back, off-the-beaten-path, and packed with natural beauty.
🛌 Where to Stay
Stay at the Wilderness Backpackers – they have comfortable private rooms, a chilled bar, and jaw-dropping sea views. click here
🏞️ Hidden Gem: The Coastal Grotto Walk
Ask the staff about the old railway track coastal walk (not on Google Maps!). It’s a 20-minute walk along a disused railway line, through a tunnel, and then… magic.
You’ll reach an incredible grotto cave, once an old restaurant, now a hidden gem. We spent the day walking, swimming, and meeting fellow travellers back at the bar in the evening. An unforgettable stop.

🏖️ Stop 5: Plettenberg Bay (1–2 Days)
Next, continue to Plettenberg Bay, a bustling beach town with more dining and café options than Wilderness.
While we personally preferred the peaceful charm of Wilderness, Plettenberg has its own allure – think golden beaches, boutique shops, and beachside cafés.
🛌 Stay Recommendation
Look for accommodation directly on the beach – the views are unbeatable, and the town’s lively atmosphere makes for a fun contrast to quieter stops.
🛣️ Bonus Detour: Bloukrans Pass
Before reaching Jeffreys Bay, take a detour along the Bloukrans Pass – part of the original Garden Route, now technically closed but still passable and incredibly scenic.
We even saw a park ranger and mentioned our plan – he had no issue. It’s a hidden gem for those craving a bit of off-road adventure.
🏄 Final Stop: Jeffreys Bay (1 Day)
Known for its world-famous surf break, Jeffreys Bay (J-Bay) is a mecca for surfers. But be aware – out of season (like in September), it can feel a bit empty and underwhelming.
We didn’t love the town itself, but if you’re into surfing, it’s worth a visit during the right time of year.
✅ Final Tips for Driving the Garden Route
- Rent a car – flexibility is key, especially in areas with limited public transport or Uber access.
- Travel in September/October – whale season is in full swing, the weather is mild, and it’s less touristy.
- Pack for layers – you’ll experience different climates, from wine valleys to windy coastlines.
