Ah, Calcutta! Or Kolkata, as it is now known, is a city that effortlessly marries the past with the future. Nestled on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River, this vibrant city is a tapestry of historical grandeur, modern advancements, and ceaseless energy. Kolkata is a wonderful city to visit in India, with beautiful old buildings that stand as testaments to its storied past. As you walk through its streets, you’ll find yourself in a place that is both futuristic and stuck in the past, an ongoing splurge of energy, color, and excitement.

For a holiday Kolkata is great, i visited using 5 days annual leave, spent a couple of days in the Sundarbans and the rest of the time in Kolkata. Below is everything you can do in the city, it amazed me how much we could do.

The Gastronomic Delight in Kolkata

First and foremost, let’s talk about the food. Oh my god, the food! Kolkata is a paradise for food lovers. From mouth-watering street food to elegant fine dining, this city offers an array of culinary delights that won’t break the bank. Street vendors whip up irresistible kati rolls (roti wraps filled with spiced meats and veggies), while bustling food stalls serve piping hot puchkas (pani puri) that burst with tangy flavors.

Exploring the Markets of Kolkata

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the amazing markets of Kolkata. These markets are a sensory overload, offering everything from fresh produce to handcrafted textiles at incredibly low prices. Yes, you’ll be hassled by eager vendors, but it’s all part of the experience. Everyone is so friendly, and haggling becomes a fun game.

Take some time to explore New Market, where you can find anything and everything under the sun. For a unique experience, visit the flower markets at Mullick Ghat, where thousands of vibrant flowers create a mesmerizing spectacle. Don’t forget to buy some fabric and have clothes tailored just for you. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are unmatched.

A Day at the Parks in Kolkata

If the chaos of the markets becomes overwhelming, the lush parks of Kolkata offer a serene escape. The sprawling Maidan, often referred to as the “lungs of Kolkata,” is the perfect place to laze around and soak in the natural beauty. Victoria Memorial, with its manicured gardens, is another great spot to unwind and reflect on the city’s colonial history.

Kolkata Wetlands: A Hidden Gem

A visit to the Kolkata wetlands is an absolute must. This incredible sustainable sewage support system for the city is a marvel of ecological engineering. We opted for a bike tour that we found on Airbnb, and it was a remarkable experience. As we cycled around, it felt like we were in the countryside, right in the heart of the city. The wetlands are surprisingly free of any unpleasant smells, and the tranquility of the area provides a stark contrast to the bustling city life.

Stepping Back in Time: Historical Buildings of Kolkata

Kolkata’s historical buildings are like pages from a history book, transporting you to a bygone era. The Indian Museum, with its vast collection of artifacts, offers a glimpse into India’s rich cultural heritage. St. Paul’s Cathedral, with its impressive Gothic architecture, is another must-visit. As you wander through the old buildings, you can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The Enigmatic Trees of Kolkata

Now, this may sound a bit unusual, but the trees in Kolkata are truly mesmerizing. The sprawling roots of ancient banyan trees seem to overtake the city, creating an almost surreal landscape. Walking under their canopy feels like stepping into a scene from a movie or a video game, where nature and urban life intertwine in the most captivating way.

Eden Gardens: Cricket Fever in Kolkata

Kolkata is cricket mad, and no trip to the city is complete without a visit to Eden Gardens. We were lucky enough to be there during the World Cup, and the atmosphere was electric. The city’s passion for cricket is infectious, and even if you’re not a die-hard fan, the energy and excitement will draw you in. Watching a match at Eden Gardens is an experience you’ll cherish forever.

A Day at the Horse Races in Kolkata

For a different kind of thrill, we spent a day at the Kolkata Race Course. Take a taxi to the races, and you’ll find yourself in an elegant old building that makes you feel like you’ve traveled back to the 1920s. Flat racing at its finest, the race course offers an exhilarating day out. Be mindful that you’re not allowed to use your phone during the races, so keep it on you but don’t take it out. You can buy tickets at the door, and the whole experience is both nostalgic and exciting.
