Watching cricket in Antigua isn’t just a sport; it’s a celebration of the island’s culture and spirit. Whether you’re a cricket enthusiast or simply love an unforgettable experience, visiting Antigua for a match is something everyone should try. The energy, the people, and the relaxed atmosphere make it truly special.
Why Visit Antigua?
Antigua offers the perfect mix of excitement and tranquility. The island’s love for cricket is unmatched, with locals and visitors alike creating an incredible party atmosphere during matches. Beyond the cricket, Antigua is a wonderful place to explore, with stunning beaches, welcoming locals, and a laid-back vibe that makes every moment feel like a getaway. Antigua is less touristy than other Caribbean islands and perfect for a relaxed, authentic experience.
Making the Trip Affordable
Visiting Antigua doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little planning, this trip can fit into almost anyone’s annual leave budget. Since cricket season usually falls in November, it’s the off-season for tourism in Antigua, which means cheaper flights and accommodation. Even though forecasts might predict daily rain, it’s usually brief (think 10 minutes), and the weather is otherwise warm and sunny.
Where to Stay
I recommend staying in English Harbour, a quiet and charming area ideal for exploring the island. Staying within walking distance of Pigeon Beach is a bonus. It’s a beautiful, serene spot perfect for relaxing between adventures. From here, you can also catch a water taxi from Nelson’s Dockyard to Gallions Beach, where you’ll find great snorkeling and lovely waterfront restaurants.
Some affordable hotels I recommend staying at:
The Moxy Hotel: https://tripadvisor.tp.st/WvGjUN6F – a great, clean hotel in a very good location
Antigua Yacht Club Marina Resort: https://booking.tp.st/zubZuCoV – another great and affordable option
Adrmials Inn: https://booking.tp.st/fmUG253Y for something slightly more fancy but beautiful
The Waterfront Inn: https://tripadvisor.tp.st/UEFKRQi1 A cheaper and more affordable option
Things to Do in Antigua
1. The Cricket: A Must-Experience Event
Cricket in Antigua is more than just a game—it’s a cultural event filled with energy and joy. Here’s what you need to know:
- Tickets: You don’t need to book in advance. At the car park near the stadium, you’ll find locals selling “ground and mound” tickets for around $20. just look for a little hole in the wall and you can buy tickets there:
- Food and Drinks: The stadium is lined with BBQ stands offering mouthwatering dishes, including half lobsters that are both delicious and affordable. Make sure to bring cash as not all vendors accept cards.
- The Atmosphere: Steel drum bands, dancing, and friendly locals turn the cricket into an island-wide celebration.

2. Hike or Visit Shirley Heights Lookout
On Thursdays and Sundays, head to Shirley Heights Lookout, either by hiking up or taking a taxi. The views from the top are breathtaking—some of the best on the island. Add in a lively steel drum band, delicious food and drinks, and a fun, party-like atmosphere, and it’s a night you won’t forget.

Antigua’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkeling. Bring your own gear or join a snorkeling tour from English Harbour. Gallions Beach is a great spot to start, with vibrant marine life just a short swim away. There is some great and affordable diving to experience around the island.

4. Round-the-Island Boat Tour
For around $120, you can join a boat tour that circles the island. It’s a fantastic way to see Antigua’s coastline, complete with lunch, dinner, and an open bar.
Where to Eat
Antigua’s dining scene offers a mix of flavors and settings to suit any mood. These were some of my favorite yet affordable spots (alot of the restaurants in Antigua are very expensive, this is a good afforadable list):

- Flatties: Delicious food in a relaxed setting.
- The Yacht Club: Perfect for a scenic meal by the water.
