The perfect affordable summer holiday destination, Europe secret Albania

A couple of summers ago i stumbled across one of the easiest, adventurous and best European summer holiday spots. There is a full itinerary here on our website, but below i wanted to include some personal travel tips tricks and reflections.

Albania really is a hidden gem of the Balkans! From ancient castles and mountain towns to vibrant beachside cities and breathtaking natural wonders, this itinerary promises a taste of Albania’s diverse beauty.

For this trip i would definitely recommend hiring a car, the roads are good and it is an easy country to navigate. Watch out for the motorways as there arent many traffic lights and often roads just cutting across.

Day 1: Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows

We started our journey in Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” due to its picturesque Ottoman-era houses. Although this can be missed i would recommend spendin the night within the walls of Berat Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 2: Gjirokastër – The Stone City – AN ABSOLUTE MUST

Gjirokastër was beautiful, another UNESCO-listed town famed for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Spend the night in a traditional stone house and explore the Gjirokastër Fortress. There are great restaurants and shops for souvenirs and it is just a beautiful setting.

Day 3: Sarandë – Only go if you want a party

We then headed south to Sarandë, a lively coastal town known for its buzzing nightlife. Its not a pretty town. The water is turquoise blue, and sunsets beautiful, but it is made for partying and the classic European strip. Spend the afternoon soaking up the sun at Mirror Beach or chilling at one of the beachfront cafes. In the evening, dive into Sarandë’s nightlife scene with beachside bars and clubs.

Day 4: Ksamil – Paradise by the Ionian Sea

Just a stone’s throw from Sarandë lies Ksamil, a coastal paradise with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Relax on the beaches or take a boat ride to the nearby islands. Indulge in a seafood feast at one of the mussel restaurants—it’s a must-do in Ksamil! I would recommend the Mussel house just outside of town, it was delicious.

Day 5: Exploration and Relaxation in Ksamil

Go and visit the mesmerizing Blue Eye spring for the day, a natural wonder with vivid blue hues. It is touristy around the blue eye but make sure you walk around the surrounding area, it is a beautiful day out. The car gives you this flexibility. There is a nice cafe/lunch spot there.

Day 7: Departure

It is a long drive, but heading back to Tirana for a flight home, you have made the most of your Albanian adventure.

Albania may have its share of visitors, but its unspoiled landscapes and affordable charms make it a must-visit destination in the Balkans. Embrace the spirit of adventure and discovery as you explore this beautiful country on a week-long road trip. Get ready for an unforgettable journey through Albania’s mountains, beaches, and cultural treasures!

Some tips and tricks

Food to Eat:

  1. Byrek: A savory pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat. It’s a popular snack or breakfast item.
  2. Tave Kosi: Baked lamb with yogurt and rice, a traditional Albanian dish worth trying.
  3. Qofte: Albanian meatballs, often served with bread and salad.
  4. Fergese: A dish made with peppers, tomatoes, and cottage cheese, typically served with bread.
  5. Seafood: Along the coast, try fresh seafood dishes like grilled fish or seafood risotto.
  6. Raki: Albania’s national alcoholic drink, often offered as a welcoming gesture. Be warned this is dangerously alcoholic

Currency and Cash:

  1. Currency: The official currency in Albania is the Albanian lek (ALL). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas, but it’s recommended to have some lek for smaller establishments and transportation.
  2. ATMs: ATMs are readily available in major cities. Look for banks or ATMs that display the Visa or MasterCard logos for international withdrawals.
  3. Credit Cards: While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants, and stores, smaller establishments may prefer cash. Always carry some cash for convenience.

Finding Accommodation:

  1. Booking Websites: Use popular booking platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, or Hotels.com to find accommodation options in Albania.
  2. Location: Choose accommodations based on your itinerary. In Tirana, look for places near the city center or Skanderbeg Square. In coastal areas like Saranda or Dhermi, prioritize beachfront or centrally located properties.
  3. Book in Advance: Especially during peak travel seasons (summer), book your accommodation well in advance to secure the best options and prices.
  4. Local Guesthouses: Consider staying in traditional guesthouses (known as “guesthouses” or “pensione”) for a more authentic experience and to support local businesses.
  5. Contact the Host: If you have specific preferences or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the host or property manager before booking.
